Upper extremity orthopedics deals with both the surgical and non-surgical treatment of conditions and problems that take place from the tip of the hand to the shoulder. These conditions include immediate cure of fractures and/or soft tissue injuries, reconstruction of old injuries, arthritis, nerve compression syndromes (like carpal tunnel syndrome), infections, congenital problems and new growths or tumors.
Surgery, when necessary, often involves minimally invasive techniques such as the use of arthroscopy to visualize, diagnose and treat problems of the shoulder, elbow and wrist. Usually these procedures can be performed in an outpatient setting, minimizing discomfort and inconvenience.
